"Incredibly thorough and well-organized resource that brings together a wealth of information for families and educators . . . straight-forward, (presents) consistent interventions on a wide range of behaviors and skills."
Welcome to Jeanie McAfee's Website
This web site is intended for anyone who works with individuals who have Asperger's Syndrome (AS), high-functioning autism (HFA), or related diagnoses. Because these diagnoses were widely recognized only within the last seven to eight years, it is not surprising that the number of people identified as having one of these disorders recently has risen at what might appear to be a rather alarming rate. Nor is it surprising that the demand for programs designed to meet the specific needs of these individuals has increased, and has even outpaced the ability of professionals in the field to develop such programs. There simply has not been enough time to develop a comprehensive range of interventions, let alone to study and compare their effectiveness. This is why it is crucial for people with these diagnoses and for those who care for them to share what they do know about what does and does not work.
This website is a place where family members, professionals, and paraprofessionals can find and share practical, hands-on information on what works: on the resources that are out there, including innovative, new techniques and materials as well as those that have been in use for a few years. When people share this type of information, it can provide ideas and techniques that can be studied and further developed to help our students, clients, and loved ones with these diagnoses. To this end, this website contains information about currently available resources as well as a forum for users to share questions and information on techniques that have worked (or not worked) for them. You also will find pages listing frequently asked questions and my upcoming conference schedule, as well as information about my book, Navigating the Social World: A Curriculum for Individuals with Asperger's Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, and Related Disorders. My aim is to keep this web site practical. My hope is that it will become a repository of shared (that means you!) program ideas, pearls of wisdom, treatment approaches, and pitfalls to avoid. Thank you for your interest and participation.
